Urim and Thummim (Hebrew אורים ותמים lights and perfections) is the name given to a process of divination used by the ancient Israelites to discover God's will about a particular event.
According to the Jewish view, the Urim and Thummim dates back to the High Priest of Israel. The chest plate that was used folded in half, forming a pocket where there was a scroll containing the name of God. This name was causing some letters engraved on precious stones lighted according to the questions asked. That he wanted an answer (only issues of relevance within the Jewish community could be asked) was the high priest. This turned out to have the ark of the covenant, and the investigator standing behind the High Priest was the question quietly. The high priest, looking at the letters that were kindled, was inspired to read God's answer. These tools were used until the destruction of the First Temple, when they stopped working.
Generally Christians believe that the Urim and Thummim were two stones placed in the breastplate of the High Priest of Israel, containing a face and hit another negative response. Making yourself the question, threw up stones, and in accordance with the sides confirmed that Caisse was a negative response, or without positive results. But there is the possibility of these two rocks are just a symbolic element that represents a special gift given to the priest, who had a breast height. This position indicated that the word of God [(Gd)] was to be cherished in the heart of the priest and also had to judge the difficult issues in accordance with the actual Word of God that they had been entrusted [(Pastor Eddie Sources )].
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that the Urim and Thummim are two stones in an arch of gold, which the prophet Joseph Smith Jr. used to decipher and translate the text of the Book of Mormon.
